My Other Garden

So as most of you know, I do the majority of my gardening over at my old house (the brief story of why told here.) But I love plants and gardening so much that I just couldn't bear the idea of not having something to play with on a daily basis. So I improvised and made a mini garden that fits in a small space in our backyard. I keep it up on a table so that the lawn service can get around it easily, and it also makes it a good height for plucking and inspection.

It consists mostly of herbs, but I also have some cat grass growing (in bottom photo) and also some morning glories that haven't gotten any blooms on them yet. We have lavender, rosemary, sage, basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, cilantro, and mint at our finger tips at all times, which is perfect for summer cuisine. I of course also have my trusty Big Red garden stake watching over all the plants making sure that everything grows well.

I'm also growing a growbot... a Mr. Growbot to be exact. Just kidding, but we are growing some cherry tomatoes as well. We have one plant of yellow cherries and another of red cherries- perfect for a little color and flavor on a salad. We also have already had some beneficial visitors to our mini garden:

Our little lady bug friend just stopped by for a moment (long enough to get a photo!), but hopefully there are more from where she came from. Here's why.

Until next time.

Play him off, Keyboard Cake!

It's Mr. Growbot's birthday tomorrow and in order to celebrate, I made him a cake in the shape of the one musical instrument he knows how to play- the keyboard. Mr. Growbot plays in an electronica band and plays the keyboard and the computer (it's hard to explain), so I couldn't think of any other shaped cake to that he would enjoy more. It's become a tradition for me to make a new and exciting cake every year for Mr. Growbot's birthday. Last year I made him a delectable (but normal shaped) coconut cake and 2 years ago I made him a He-Man shaped cake (seen above), a favorite childhood character of Mr. Growbot.

No big news in gardening, although temperatures around here have gotten into the 50s this week which certainly brings hope for planting spring crops soon.

Another note- to understand the title of my post, you must know Keyboard Cat:

Knitting Madness!!! and other old lady news

Since winter 2010 seems to be never ending, I've recently picked up knitting to have something to do in my spare time. My boss's wife and her mother are knitting experts and were kind enough to have some knitting teaching parties for their friends. I've only learned basic knitting so far (casting on, basic knit, and casting off- for you knitters out there) but I've already accomplished quite a bit. I've made about a quarter of a very large scarf and one and a half dishcloths. The scarf is quite the task since I've made it so wide, so I figure I'll probably be able to actually wear it by next winter. The dishcloths, on the other hand, are nice and quick, not to mention useful. When Mr. Growbot and I got married, we received several knitted dishcloths as a wedding gift, and I use them all the time. They do a great job at scrubbing, yet they are soft and gentle on delicate items like glass. Hopefully I'll be churning them out quick enough to replace our old ones as they age.

In other news, the seedlings are starting to look like real plants and everything is doing pretty well. I will (hopefully) be planting some herb seeds and a few more broccoli seeds this weekend for the upcoming growing season. Last weekend the weather was great, so Mr. Growbot and I were able to get out and take care of the raised beds in our garden. The soil looks great and was full of fat, happy worms, which is always a good sign. I can't wait until growing season actually starts! Until next time...

The Blog has begun.... Finally!

I have a lot of hobbies. I take a lot of photos of my hobbies. I need a blog for my hobbies. This is how it's all started. Hopefully this blog can be a resource for anyone interested in gardening, canning, or anything else related to living an "old lady" lifestyle! Mr. Growbot also helps me out with my various endeavors, so this blog will be about us and our adventures, as it will be about my various projects.
Enjoy!
